THE PUBLISHERS
GOT SOMETHING TO SAY:
Way back in 2006 was when we first decided to translate this
Tom Waits biography by Jay S. Jacobs to German.
We have decided to tackle this project because we are convinced
that this is the best book available about Tom Waits. It's far
from perfect, and even farther from complete. But have compared
it to the others. And Jay S. Jacobs won.
To buy the translation rights was sort of an impulse purchase.
None of us is making their money with translations, with typesetting
or publishing books. We have no experience in any of these fields,
although we have sneaked into one or two of those.
Our determination turned out to be a very refreshing tour de
force. While being on the commuter train and in an old signal
man's house is where the rough translation was done. During
the day we went about our jobs and in the evenings and sleepless
nights we continuously reworked the chapters. Enough time to
listen to Tom Waits' music!
If you ever did the typesetting for a book, then you know that
the devil is in the details. And a book has got a lot of those.
We really hope that, in comparison to professionals, we didn't
ruin it too much. We pay our respects to all the designers out
there who continue to turn out beautiful books. Tommi did a
pretty good job, though (remarks DK).
We pay further respect to all the editors of this world, who
hunt down and kill off typing mistakes, contectual weeds and
stylistic bugs alike. We especially thank Andreas Feuerstein,
who did his best to make our book readable and who can probably
recite it by heart.
We also extend our thanks to Gabriela Linares and Jurgen Verfaillie.
The two of them have not only illustrated each chapter and created
the cover, they have read the book, understood it and in ther
passion for music created 13 works of art that made this book
such a beauty. Thanks!
Well, we're keeping our fingers crossed. And ask you kindly:
Read the book and enjoy it (if you read German, that is).
