MUSIK & MYTHOS:
TOM WAITS
Tom Waits is a brand, in some sense. When you mention his name,
most people have heard of him (at least those interested in
music). Yet, he is not a superstar. Luckily. Defying most startdom
allures, he continuosly reinvents himself.
He sang duettes with Bette Midler and Les Claypool of Primus.
He opened for Frank Zappa. He scored the Ramones a Grammy nomination.
He can be seen on the movie screen. He composes for theatre
and the movies.
But who is he? He was so busy creating a myth around his own
person that it is hard to decide what is truth and what is lore.
Yet, we wouldn't want it any other way. We want to be unsure.
We want to hear him spinn his yarn. And, in contrast to him,
we enjoy looking back at what he did in the past.
This book embarks the Way of the Waits, sinking deep into the
"gospel according to Tom Waits", putting it into perspec
tive by using historical references, third party interviews
and so on.
This book is being translated by the team of STAGECRAFT ENTERTAINMENT
and is illustrated by Jurgen Verfaillie and Gaby Linares.

BACKGROUND:
The first time we thought about translating this book was in
2004. Daniel and Tommi were Tom Waits Fans and Wolf didn't dislike
the guy either. So doing a translation of what we thought (and
still think) to the best Tom Waits biography available sounded
like a good idea.
Two years later, the german rights were still available, a revised
edition was about to be published and so we revived this idea.
Tommi spoke to the author, Jay S. Jacobs and the to the publishers.
He was referred to the agency that deals with the licensing
business in Europe.
Tommi managed to scrape together the initial investment to buy
the rights. When it comes to paying the illustrator and the
printers, Tommi will have to sell his car, which he doesn't
use anymore anyway.
